[Sticky] Introduce Yourself!
In my first life I served as a Security Policeman in the U.S. Air Force from 1986 through 2007, after leaving the military I went on to earn a Master’s in Social Work. As a civilian I have provided treatment services for justice-involved veterans and homeless veterans suffering from post traumatic stress, military sexual trauma, traumatic brain injury, addiction, mental illness and co-occurring disorders. I believe in the power of vulnerability and how through your vulnerability one can gain better insight of oneself. It is through this insight that healing can take place. In 2016, a snapshot of my story of resiliency was captured in an observational documentary “After Fire”.
I became a WoVen facilitator, and am part of a two-person team for the San Antonio location! Mrs. Melissa McKinnon and I are proud to continue serving our Women Veterans as WoVen pioneers. My husband and I enjoy spending quiet time together at home with our rescue animals. Fun Fact: My husband and I went on 3 dates before I announced to him "You are my future". He agreed and we were married a week later. We have been married now for 14 years, and going strong...
I am extremely excited about life... I have always been and didn’t really understand why until I visited an Air Force recruitment office one day. I asked if I could sign up for the Air Force Reserve and the recruiter asked me “what are you coming back for?” I took a little time to ponder that question and said “nothing” right then I knew I was excited about traveling the world and getting help to finish my degree!!
I have since retired from the Air Force after 23 years of service, I completed my bachelors in 2011 and M.B.A in 2015 with the help of the GI Bill! I have and continue traveling the world with the same amount of extreme excitement that I grew up with!! I have met a lot of wonderful people in the military and still keep in touch with many of them today! I am looking forward to enjoying the WoVeN community to meet more awesome people each day!!
I found out about WoVeN from two of the most beautiful souls I’ve ever met before Ernestine and Cat... thanks for introducing me!!
Fun Fact: At the age of 17, I moved out of my parents home to live in the YWCA with my best friend and living on my own for 4 years made me think I had out grown my city, which guided me to the Air Force recruitment office... Best Move I ever made!!
My name is Sue. I am retired Air Force.
Fun fact - I dated my husband to keep him from complaining about my alarm bothering him in the dorm. He was my downstairs neighbor. We will celebrate 30 years marriage May 2018. He retired from the Air Force 6 months after me.
I taught junior high social studies right after retirement. It wasn't what I had dreamed it would be. I now stay home and help out with grandchildren 5, 3, and 1.
I was an Air Force Security Police, K-9 Handler from 1987-1991. I served in Just Cause and Desert Shield/Storm. After the AF I continued my education to finish with PhD in Psychology. I am an author and speaker for veteran women issues, focusing on MST, PTSD, and TBI. I live in Texas, had two grown children, my daughter a graduate from BYU and my son in the AF in England and just married (first of this month) to an AF veteran.
Been married for 25 years and still going, for eternity. I began a faith-based non-profit called - G.I. Joan Project, and we are conducting MST workshops in Texas. I am training my own service dog (1/2 lab, 1/2 German Shredder) and the house is still standing (in pieces, but standing).
